Books are In!

Our copies of F. LaGard Smith’s book Radical Restoration are in.  I should have them available at Sunset on Wednesday night as well as on Saturday at our meeting.  If you need a copy, the books cost $14/each.

Thanks,

July Book

It appears that there has been a strong consensus to stick within Restoration thought for the next book and read F. LaGard Smith’s book Radical Restoration

So, this is what we will be reading for our meeting on July 12.

Robert is going to order the books for us again.  Please note in the comments to this post whether you want him to order you a copy of the book.  Please leave your comment by Tuesday, June 10 so Robert can order the books and distribute them by Sunday June 15 giving everyone almost a full month to read the book.

Thanks,
BB

June Meetings

For all who are in town this Saturday, June 7th and wish to meet, we will meet from 10am-noon at Starbucks located in the shopping center at SW 88th Street and SW 107th Avenue to discuss Worship Old and New.

We will have a followup/make up meeting on Saturday, June 21 (location TBD) due to the number of people who will be out of town this weekend.  By that time, those of us who met on the 7th may be able to define worship and answer all questions :-)   Everyone who put the time into reading this book (or parts of it) will have an opportunity to discuss their ideas both here on the Blog and in the group on either June 7th, 21st, or both.  Please continue reading and adding  your comments.

The July meeting will be on July 12th in deference to the Independence Day weekend the previous week.

July Meeting Book Proposal

I’ve narrowed down the book selection to two books:

Radical Restoration:  A Call for Pure and Simple Christianity by F. LaGard Smith

Smith is a former Pepperdine professor and now teaches at Lipscomb University as well as writing a number of books.  In this book, Smith examines whether we have truly restored New Testament Christianity from the perspective of someone who is familiar with the restoration movement and the church of Christ specifically.  Check it out on Amazon here.

A Generous Orthodoxy by Brian McLaren

McLaren is a leading writer for what is known as the Emerging Church.  In this book, McLaren attempts to create a style of Christianity that is based on taking the best aspects of various denominations and doctrinal traits in an effort to eliminate the “us” vs. “them” mindset.  Check it out  on Amazon here.

I think both books will be challenging in different ways.  Smith will challenge some of our current practices within the restoration movement.  McLaren will challenge our viewpoint toward all of Christianity.

Please check out both books on Amazon.  If you are not familiar with Amazon, roll the mouse pointer over the picture of each book at the top of the page.  You will see a link to “Browse Sample Pages” including the table of contents, the flaps, sample text, etc.  Once you have had a chance to check out both books, leave comments as to your preference.  If there is an overwhelming choice, I’ll go with the group’s decision.  If it’s divided, I’ll pick between the two.

Thanks,
BB

So…

Let me get this started. How are you enjoying Webber’s book? Strengths? Weaknesses?
