July Meeting Book Proposal

I’ve narrowed down the book selection to two books:

Radical Restoration:  A Call for Pure and Simple Christianity by F. LaGard Smith

Smith is a former Pepperdine professor and now teaches at Lipscomb University as well as writing a number of books.  In this book, Smith examines whether we have truly restored New Testament Christianity from the perspective of someone who is familiar with the restoration movement and the church of Christ specifically.  Check it out on Amazon here.

A Generous Orthodoxy by Brian McLaren

McLaren is a leading writer for what is known as the Emerging Church.  In this book, McLaren attempts to create a style of Christianity that is based on taking the best aspects of various denominations and doctrinal traits in an effort to eliminate the “us” vs. “them” mindset.  Check it out  on Amazon here.

I think both books will be challenging in different ways.  Smith will challenge some of our current practices within the restoration movement.  McLaren will challenge our viewpoint toward all of Christianity.

Please check out both books on Amazon.  If you are not familiar with Amazon, roll the mouse pointer over the picture of each book at the top of the page.  You will see a link to “Browse Sample Pages” including the table of contents, the flaps, sample text, etc.  Once you have had a chance to check out both books, leave comments as to your preference.  If there is an overwhelming choice, I’ll go with the group’s decision.  If it’s divided, I’ll pick between the two.

Thanks,
BB

Responses

  1. I vote for examining the restoration of New Testament Christianity with Radical Restoration by F. LaGard Smith.

  2. I also vote for F. LaGard Smith’s book. He is an outstanding author that we can relate to. From what I can see from the back cover, he will deal with issues that are front and center with us today. Preachers, Lord’s Supper, Elders, etc. are all reviewed with the critical eye of the NT. Like eyeing a nice Ribeye steak from a distance, I feel hungry for this meal and want to taste it!

  3. I could really go for either…I’ve been wanting to read A Generous Orthodoxy for a while, but Radical Restoration sounds like something we could closely relate to.

  4. I, like others, would enjoy either book, but think that Smith’s book might have a more immediate application.

  5. Another vote for Radical Restoration by F. LaGard Smith.
